This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most famous and desirable cars in automobile history, the legendary, Jaguar E-Type or what was popularly known as, E-Type Jag.

Jaguar plan to celebrate this special year at high-profile motoring events through the year.

The company will mark the anniversary at the upcoming 2011 Geneva Motor Show and continue the celebration at the Goodwood’s Revival and Festival of Speed, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Nurburgring Old Timer Grand Prix and a host of Jaguar customer, dealer and lifestyle events worldwide.
E-type Jag
When the E-Type Jag was launched on 15th March 1961, it took the world by storm. Even on the day it was launched, it took the media by such frenzy for demonstration runs that the Chief Test Driver then, Normal Dewis was asked to drive another model all the way from Switzerland through the night.  Its design, its proportions, stance and purity of line caused such a massive appeal in the following years amongst automobile enthusiasts that it was made a permanent exhibit at New York’s Museum of Modern Art!

The E-Type Jag’s bodywork and proportions were designed by Malcolm Sayer, an aerodynamic engineer by qualification who had also applied his aerodynamic expertise in designing the Le Mans winning C and D type racers. The influence of the E-Type’s design is so enormous that it is felt in the designs of Jaguar’s modern day offerings.
The most celebrated testimonial to the E-Type came from Enzo Ferrari who called it “The most beautiful car ever made”.

When launched, the E-Type was powered by a straight six engine that had powered Jaguar to five Le Mans victories and by 1961, in its 3.8 ltr form produced 265 bhp of power and a massive 260lb of torque! These credentials made the car a genuine 150mph machine and just like its predecessor, XK120, the most powerful production car of its time.
E-type Jag
The E-Type Jag was priced at £ 2,256 15s at its launch which included purchase tax and the all important wired wheels which were optional. To give you an idea of the pricing of this performance car, the equivalent price of the E-Type today would be just £ 38, 000!

The E-type remained in production for fourteen years and sold more than 70,000 units making it Europe’s first mass produced sports car.
